A diesel engine (sometimes capitalized as Diesel engine) is an internal combustion engine that uses the heat of compression to initiate ignition to burn the fuel, which is injected into the combustion chamber during the final stage of compression. This is in contrast to a petrol engine (known as a gasoline engine in North America) or gas engine (using a gaseous fuel, not gasoline), which uses the Otto cycle, in which an air-fuel mixture is ignited by a spark plug.

The diesel cycle was invented by German engineer Rudolf Diesel and it has the highest thermal efficiency of any regular internal or external combustion engine due to its very high compression ratio. Low-speed diesel engines (as used in ships and other applications where overall engine weight is relatively unimportant) often have a thermal efficiency which exceeds 50 percent.

Diesel engines are manufactured in two stroke and four stroke versions. They were originally used as a more efficient replacement for stationary steam engines. Since the 1910s they have been used in submarines and ships. Use in locomotives, large trucks and electric generating plants followed later. In the 1930s, they slowly began to be used in a few automobiles. Since the 1970s, the use of diesel engines in larger on-road and off-road vehicles in the USA increased. As of 2007, about 50 percent of all new car sales in Europe are diesel.

The world's largest diesel engine is currently a Wärtsilä marine diesel of about 80 MW output.

Do diesel engines have a longer life than petrol ones regardless of engine capacity?
Q. I know diesel engines have a longer life than petrol ones, but not sure where engine capacity comes into this.

A. No, this is largely a myth. Large diesel engines last longer because they are designed too. If there were similar large gas engines they could be built to last the same way, but there generally aren't any large gasoline engines like that because they are not efficient. Diesel engines in cars last about the same as the equivalent-sized gasoline versions...sometimes not as long. It depends a great deal on the engine design, and not whether it is a diesel or not. Diesel engines run under much higher stresses and shock than gasoline engines, and produce dirtier combustion. If all other things were equal, they would not last as long. The reason they do is that they have substantially heavier construction, thicker parts, and larger bearings.… [cont.]

Are the newer gasoline engines as reliable and long-living as diesel engines?
Q. are gasoline engines that much improved? I am talking diesel engines in cars and light trucks and vans. A car salesman tried to tell me this today. maybe he was right---what do YOU think?

A. Diesels on average are always going to last longer. Your average diesel will run to 400,000 miles or more without breaking a sweat, whereas an average gas engine would last 1/2 as long. Again, these are averages, and there are examples of both over 1 million miles without a rebuild. However, the reason for the average to be much higher on the diesel is because they turn lower RPMs than a gas engine. Where you normally cruise at about 3000rpm on the highway at 70mph with a gas engine, your average diesel is turning 1800rpm, because it redlines at 4000, unlike the 7000 for the gas engine. RPM's and heat kill engines quicker than the fuel itself...and the diesels run cooler and turn less RPMs.
