Biodiesel refers to a vegetable oil- or animal fat-based diesel fuel consisting of long-chain alkyl (methyl, propyl or ethyl) esters. Biodiesel is typically made by chemically reacting lipids (e.g., vegetable oil, animal fat (tallow)) with an alcohol. Biodiesel is meant to be used in standard diesel engines and is thus distinct from the vegetable and waste oils used to fuel converted diesel engines. Biodiesel can be used alone, or blended with petrodiesel. The term "biodiesel" is standardized as mono-alkyl ester in the United States. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Biodiesel" What manufactured cars run off of biodiesel or ethanol? Q. I am looking to buy a car that runs off of biodiesel and ethanol, but I'm having problems finding what cars are out there. I want them made this year and not personally converted, manufactured that way. Can anyone give me a list of what manufactured cars run off of one or the other alternative fuel listed? Asked by JustHelping - Thu Feb 19 18:58:18 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Any diesel engine should run on biodiesel, however, it is not a good idea to put ethanol into your diesel engine because it won't run and if mixed with diesel it will substantially reduce the flashpoint of the fuel which creates a significant safety hazard (think boom :) For ethanol in a gasoline powered vehicle, you are probably already using E10 (gasoline blended with up to 10 percent ethanol by volume). If you would like to use higher blend levels or E85 (85 percent ethanol, 15 percent gasoline), then you are going to need to purchase a flexable-fuel vehicle (or FFVs). Most domestic car companies produce a number of models that are FFVs, but foreign manufacturers do not really produce many models in the US (for example, Toyota only… [cont.] Answered by Death D - Thu Feb 19 20:20:14 2009 What car runs best on vegetable oil (biodiesel)? Answered by Tony M - Mon Sep 10 21:50:34 2007 why do people suggest i run biodiesel in an older diesel engine?
Q. I understand the alterations that have to be made with vegetable oil fuels, but what is it about older engines that they 'run better on biodiesel'? is it heating, design, lower restrictions? Asked by JJ - Fri Jul 4 23:13:00 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Much of it is down to the Enigine Management Sytem. Since 2005, car manufacturers have been under much tighter emmissions restrictions, so the systems have become more complex over time. The key factors for bio-desel are that they now measure the rate of compression in the engine, and also the oxygen content into and out of the exhaust. Bio-diesel has a lower energy content than mineral, but "ignites" more easily under compression- in other words, it makes the engine think that there is a problem with the pressure on the fuel, so the engine may try to compensate. Bio-diesel also has a higher oxygen content than mineral- the exhaust monitors read this as not enough fuel getting to the engine, so increase the flow-rate of the fuel to the… [cont.] Answered by mudir_nahya - Mon Jul 7 06:39:48 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Biodiesel" From Wikiquote under the GNU Free Documentation License.
